The morning of our three day expedition into the remote Andes came and after a thirty minute wait to ‘check out’ of Chile, we were on our way to the Bolivian border. At the border we hopped off our largish mini bus, through the passport control (one man and his stamp) and packed ourselves into our mode of transport for the duration: a white 4×4. Our companions for the journey: Lisa, Saara, Bart and, our trusty driving hermano, Herman. Our first stop was to take a dip in a hot spring – tres relaxing.
Over the next two days we saw lagoons of differing colours, teaming with flamingos and other birds. Our favourite was Laguna Colarado which we visited early one morning and were blown away by what we saw.
Also, we saw varying landscapes: deserts, geysers, snow-capped peaks, huge swathes of interesting rocks and dry savannah type areas with roaming llamas, llamos and vicuñas (all of which look the same but are different sizes).
The average altitude was circa 4000m. During the first evening we felt a little tight headed, but after swapping a pack of cards for half a bottle of wine with a group of Italian hikers, we were soon A.O.K. That and the ‘coca’ mate tea.
On the third and final day we visited the Cemetario de Trenes and then entered the amazing Salar De Uyuni (Salt Flats). It’s a truly amazing place with an otherworldly feel. Many, many moons ago the water in the salt lake evaporated and left the stunning landscape. We’ll let the photographs give you an idea…
Looking great guys..Bolivia looks stunning. Big hugs to you both. xx
